Thanks for your interest. One of the things I have noticed over the years of running a KP2 MOD server, is that people will join alone, and while they are waiting and hoping for other players to show up, they run around and shoot the dogs LOL! Well, I had always wanted to the dogs to attack on sight, but they only attack when attacked, and they don't usually inflict enough damage to be of serious threat to a player. The idea for THE THING MOD is that a player can join the server alone and actually play an enjoyable round even if nobody shows up. In other words, it will be much like a single player mission, but will be open to other players to join in. Now one possibility could be that when a player joins, he is only equipped with one or two weapons and must "hunt around" for other, more powerful weapons before taking on THE THING. Or, even better, if it were possible to have a fully stocked "pawn-o-matic", and players would spawn into the server with nothing but a crowbar and then they would have to first break into the pawn-o-matic and steal some weapons/armor and ammo before taking on THE THING.

Personally, I think the player (or players) should all spawn in at the same location at the "entrance" to the warehouse or plant or whatever. When the game begins, they would all read a message that says something to the effect of "A dangerous threat has invaded this facility. Your mission is to eliminate this threat before it can escape and destroy all of humanity. Locate and secure all available weapons and equipment and then proceed to terminate the hostile entity with extreme predjudice. You have 30 minutes." Then the clock starts ticking down. The player or players will then be allowed to break down the main entrance or gate. Their first priority would be to locate the pawn-o-matic or arsenal or supply hut. They will break into this, equip themselves, and then go on the hunt for THE THING.

Now, THE THING will at first be somehow "trapped" inside a large room or area. But, once the player (or players) have opened up or broken into this area, then THE THING will be allowed to escape this original area (from where the players came in) and will then be free to hunt down the players throughout the map. Now, of course, THE THING will not try to escape the map prior to the 30 minutes because it will first want all the players dead and the players MUST be allowed to respawn just like normal DM or BM. But, if the player or players have not successfully killed THE THING by the end of the round, then they will all see a message that reads something like "The mission was a complete failure. THE THING has escaped the facility and all hope for the survival of humanity is lost". If however, THE THING is finally destroyed, then the players would get a message that reads "THE THING from another world has been terminated and the threat to humanity has been eliminated. Congratulations, you have saved the world from extinction. Please return to base" or something to that effect. Then the round is over and a new map loads.

Now, what would be totally cool is to allow server admins to set their own variables. For example, you could setup the server so that players could only respawn a certain number of times, or you could set it up so that players can only carry one weapon type at a time, so that player A gets the shotty, player B gets the tommy, player C gets the flamethrower etc...etc...

As far as THE THING goes, he should be #1)Friggin ENORMOUS, #2)Huge amounts of health and armour making him VERY hard to kill, and #3)should only have the flame-thrower type mouth weapon to "spit" on players and claws to "crowbar" players. One claw hit should reduce a player's health to like 50%. One blast from the "spit" of THE THING causes the player to become "infected". Once infected, his or her health begins to sink rapidly at the same rate it does when a player is drowning in water. If a player can find and use a med-pack, then his health will stop dropping and remain at the level it sank to before using the med-pack.

Now the point of wanting this MOD made is really quite simple. We all know Kingpin is an old game and we all know that server activity is spotty at best. BUT, we also all know that when a player jumps into a server and actually hangs around for any decent length of time, OTHER players will eventually show up because Kingpin fans never die, they just grow old and tired LOL!. Personally, I don't enjoy running around an empty server wating for someone to show up. If I see that the servers are empty, I will play a single player game. But, if I had something like THE THING mod running, I could play the game, try to win, and when others show up, I can be pleasantly surprised and they can join in the fight with me.

If the MOD is done right, people will want to setup their own servers so that they can play it whenever they want. If THE THING is designed right, it will take a mixture of fighting AND running for cover and re-stocking of ammo in order to win the round.

I think it would be fresh and fun and I think the Kingpin atmosphere is perfectly suited for harsh, industrial, decaying, artic maps and buildings. I welcome anyone's productive contributions and my offer still stands to anyone who can make this dream a playable reality.
